Help is at hand on the roof of Wales for walkers who may find themselves faced with a life threatening scenario. The Welsh Ambulance Service has joined together with Snowdon Mountain Railway, Arrhythmia Alliance and AED Locator to place a brand new Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) in Hafod Eryri on the summit of Snowdon.
In case of a cardiac emergency on or near the summit, the new Snowdon PAD that was launched on Friday 4th June 2010, can be used to assist a patient until the Emergency Services can reach the incident.
Gerard Rothwell (pictured above at the highest point of Mount Snowdon), the national PAD Scheme Manager based at Lansdowne Hospital in Cardiff, oversees the development of existing and new schemes across the country and has trained some of the Snowdon Mountain Railway café staff, Snowdonia National Park Authority Wardens and Llanberis Mountain Rescue volunteers to be able to use the equipment if the need arises on the summit. Gerard explained “We carried out the training course at the summit building to give some of the staff skills in Basic Life Support, recovery position and use of an AED, with practical scenarios. With the amount of visitors Snowdon has every year, the summit is an ideal place to have a PAD site. Early response times to cardiac emergencies and the delivery of basic life-saving treatment are the key to saving lives.”
Clive Setter of AED Locator (E.U.) Ltd, which is dedicated to promoting the placement of PADs, added “As little as 5% of people who have a Cardiac Arrest survive but with a quick response, CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) and a defibrillator, the odds of surviving can be increased to about 50%. It will be reassuring for all the tens of thousands of people who visit the summit of Snowdon and the dedicated staff, that an extra layer of emergency assistance is being provided when a Cardiac Arrest is suspected. It is our aim to install PADs in all locations that attract large numbers of people."
