How to Buy an AED and HeartSafe® Cabinet

There are many makes and models of defibrillators to choose from.  All provide the only effective way of increasing the odds in your favour if you have a Cardiac Arrest.  We hope the information we offer will help you with the planning of your purchase.

The goal of AED Locator is to encourage every community to have their own Public Access Defibrillator (PAD).  The knowledge and information obtained over the last 3 years from the initiative that we started in the Chew Valley (a rural area of North Somerset) has helped communities, institutions, offices and businesses to protect their loved ones, neighbours, friends, employees and people of all ages.  The people living and working in this rural location now have access to a PAD thereby safeguarding them against the risk that the Emergency Services may take more time to arrive than the precious few minutes that you have to restart the heart after a Cardiac Arrest has occurred.

There is a wide choice of defibrillator cabinets but few proven external cabinets.  HeartSafe® is the Rolls Royce of heated external cabinets.

The latest HeartSafe® Cabinet has been designed after many years of testing and practical use in various locations and different types of communities.

The ZOLL AED PLUS is manufactured as a Public Access Defibrillator and is specifically designed for use by a lay person.  Click here for an online demonstration.

Its features are:

  • The Real CPR Help Tool.  It is currently the only AED on the market equipped with the facility for the rescuer to receive audio and visual prompts on the frequency and depth of compressions during CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation).
  • Passive Airway Support.  The lid of the AED is removable allowing it to be placed under the patient's shoulders to assist in maintaining an open airway.
  • One Piece Electrode.  Rather than two electrode pads, the ZOLL has a single electrode for fast accurate placement as well as an extended shelf life of five years.
  • Convenient Long Lasting Battery Power.  The ZOLL AED Plus is powered by ten Lithium CR123a batteries available commerically from retail outlets and guarantee "rescue ready" power for five years.
  • Durable.  It passes the one-meter drop test and is protected from any kind of dust or water spray (Ingress Protection of IP55).
  • Battery Architecture.  It has two separate power circuits so, if for some reason one fails, there is still enough power for the other circuit to provide more than 100 shocks.
  • Conforms with the Resuscitation Council's 2005 Guidelines.  The ZOLL AED Plus supports the 2005 protocol of, following a single shock, two full minutes of CPR with cycles of 30 chest compressions followed by two rescue breaths.
  • Upgradeable.  If the Resuscitation Guidelines change in 2010, the ZOLL AED Plus will be upgraded with the appropriate software.
  • Treats ALL Cardiac Arrest Victims.  For approximately 50% of all Cardiac Arrest victims, the only treatment is good quality CPR at a rate of 30:2.  The ZOLL AED Plus will support this using the Real CPR Help facility.
  • Five Year Warranty.
  • 24/7 Technical Support.
  • Training.  Free DVD providing step by step instruction.

The HeartSine Samaritan is manufactured as a Public Access Defibrillator.  The 500P model incorporates all the features and benefits of the 300P model with the addition of a CPR advisor.  Click here for an on-line demonstration.

Its features are:

  • CPR Advisor (Model 500P only).  Uses ICG analysis technology to provide oral feedback on the effectiveness of CPR using measurement of blood conductivity through the chest cavity.
  • Portable.  The Samaritan PAD is lighter (2.4lbs) and smaller than other defibrillators.
  • Durable.  The Samaritan PAD resists shock and vibration and carries an IP56 rating, the industry’s highest rating against dust and water.  It can be taken and used virtually anywhere, even in the most inclement conditions.
  • Advanced Technology.  SCOPE™ biphasic technology automatically optimizes energy output for each person, and has been reported to provide significantly better performance in removing ventricular fibrillation (VF) by the third shock.
  • User-Friendly.  The Samaritan PAD features easy-to-understand visual and oral prompts that guide a use through the process.
  • Two Button Operation.  Only two buttons, ON and SHOCK, are required, providing straightforward operation.
  • Always Ready.  A System Status Ready indicator flashes to show that the complete system is operational and ready for use.  Device automatically runs self check each week.
  • Two Pads - One Expiry Date.  PAD-PAK™ cartridge combines battery and electrode pads, with one expiry date to monitor.
  • Low cost of ownership.  Cartridge typically has a shelf-life of 3.5 years from data of manufacture, offering significant savings over other defibrillators that require separate battery and pad units.
  • Upgradeable.  Fully upgradeable to latest AHE/ERC Guildlines.
  • Seven Year Warranty.

Go Live.…. Locate and install your Public Access Defibrillator in your community!

Installation

Install the AED and cabinet at the most visible location in your community.  Please do not hesitate to contact us should you require advice on the best location for your life saving equipment.  Some useful information to consider:

  • Your cabinet will require 240v electrical supply.  You will need to arrange for a qualified electrician to install the cabinet.  The supply is needed for the heater and internal light and only a very small amount of power is used.
  • Ensure a First Responder rescue kit is included in the cabinet.
  • Ensure an appropriate Records Log is included in the cabinet.
  • If you purchase a cabinet with or without a defibrillator, a detailed Installation and Maintenance Manual will be provided.
  • Appoint a Guardian for the AED and cabinet to inspect it on a fortnightly basis.

Ensure your policies and practices for the safe and efficient operation of the project are in place and ready to use.
Remember to include signage as part of your installation.  An overhanging sign is recommended above the cabinet to increase visibility of the placement.  Signage could be placed around the locality identifying the location and distance to the cabinet, for example posters in shop windows.

Inform your Ambulance Service

You will need to work in partnership with your local NHS Ambulance Service from the outset of deciding to position a Public Access Defibrillator in your community.  You will need to provide confirmation of the exact placement/location address, including postcode.  They will need to ensure they have your unit recorded in their Emergency Services' 999 Control Room so they are ready to provide callers with the Access Code to the secure cabinet.

The following NHS Ambulance Services support the initiative to have Public Access Defibrillators in communities:
